From our perspective, we think it is important to perform the inventory
first (our corporate legal office is overseeing the updating of our
policy and retention schedule), as it will provide information which may
be significant in identifying gaps for the assessment, i.e.
classification. We are a multi-national company with multiple
manufacturing facilities and sales office in the US and Europe. The
inventory results will also be available for corporate for the updating
of the retention schedule.

Subject: Re: Records Assessment Question
Sandra,
Can you define a records assessment in more detail ?
From my standpoint a records assessment would be done before you would
do
a records inventory. This assessment would ask questions about a
variety
of components within your records program and depending on how you
answer
rate that particular aspect of your program. This will allow you to
determine the current state of your program, compare the current state
with where you want the program to be (Future/ideal State) and do a GAP
analysis. These GAPS can then be prioritized and projects created from
them. The actual inventory of records and repositories would occur in
the
retention schedule and/or legal hold projects.
ARMA and one of the major off-site storage vendors have assessment
packages you can buy, consultants can perform this for you or if you're
very careful(unbiased) you could develop one yourself.
My 2 cents on a cold day in Iowa
