We are looking at solutions for long term preservation of records and to
achieve this I am looking at PDF/A. Focusing on the storage solutions then
am unsure of the route to go.
- Write Many (Magnetic).
- WORM DVD-R UDO(Optical)
- HDD WORM (Magnetic)

My thoughts
(1) Compliance - WORM could be more compliant as it is not possible to
directly modify data once it has been stored. Data is modified by deleting
the original data and writing the modified data.
Data stored on Write Many (magnetic), can in principle be modified.

(2) Governance - Risk can be minimised for Write Many (magnetic), by
ensuring adequate controls are implemented in both the storage system and
the EDRMS access control system. - Users with read only access rights
cannot modify the data but those with read/write access can, and therefore
there is a requirement to securely log at the system level all read/write
accesses so that unauthorised writes to the system can be detected.
The governance of WORM would less resourceful

(3) Cost - Write many (magnetic) is far cheaper than optical.

(4) Access - Optical would be slower

Whichever choice is made then this storage solution / area would be separate
from the active records and would have different policies regarding back up
/ migration etc

I would appreciate any thoughts / comments on this please.

Regards Edgar
