Friends on the Listserve~

I've been asked to query the listserve about the following issue:

The Alaska State Archives is considering alternatives to the current
configuration of its primary records storage stack. The stack has
nearly reached 100% capacity and adjustments must be made to accommodate
continued collection growth. We've found the current 30" aisle width
inadequate to accommodate ladders and other equipment, and are
considering reconfiguring to allow 36" aisles. We also need to provide
earthquake bracing that could affect storage density.

Our stack is 44' X 97'. It contains twenty-three ranges of shelves
divided by eleven aisles with one 48" aisle along one end. Shelves are
of standard steel "erector set" construction. All are 32" X 42", hung
on 15' upright grids, which yield 14 vertical feet of shelves. (We don't
use the top top-15th shelf.). Each shelf accommodates six standard
"records center boxes" of one cubic foot volume.

We have eighteen ranges of 32" X 42" sections, four ranges of 10
sections, and one range of 13 sections. We have a limited number of
manuscript cases and ledgers on these shelves, but by far the greatest
proportion are one cubic foot boxes.

Current density of records in the stack is about 18,000'. Average annual
intake is 700 cubic feet, and 587 cubic feet are in holding status
awaiting appraisal at our offsite contact records center and addition to
the collection.

We're interested in knowing whether other depositories have faced this
situation, and how they have handled it. Anyone who has experience
dealing with this issue is welcome to contact me, off line. All
suggestions will be gratefully appreciated.

Regards,

Larry Hibpshman, Archivist 3
