Just as an example - I have 35 years of experience in records management - everything from running a records center and micrographics department for a major public utility to systems administrator for a mid-size law firm. I have 2 years of college courses (business admin) without a degree, and certainly no masters. The first thing a degree will get you is a bigger salary to begin with just by walking in the door with a degree. The second thing is respect. If you're working with upper-management/board members/shareholders who all have advanced degrees - you're not going to be looked at the same way if you haven't shared their common experience of struggling thru grad school. I'm finally going back for my bachelors degree in Records Management (thru UW-Milwaukee's SOIS distance learning program)and then on to a Masters. It's never too late!

Hi Nolene - If you are interested in becoming certified by the ICRM, perhaps you should submit an application to the ICRM to see if you already meet the CRM requirements. That is really the only way to know if you already have the experience and knowledge that will qualify you for the ICRM. I do not think taking the Masters program will necessarily qualify you for the ICRM, and it is an expensive and time consuming endeavor that may not be needed by someone with your background and level of expertise.

For those of us who already have the CRM, the value of a Masters Degree depends on individual goals and interests. I became certified by the ICRM in 2000 and am currently pursuing the MLIS Degree. My reasons for pursuing the degree is my interest in the Information Sciences side of RM and to broaden my knowledge in the field of Information Science. Now that the MARA program is being made available, I will need to look at the course offerings and decide if it is more in line with my goals and interests than the MLIS.

Also, you may want to look at the Salary Survey that was done in 2005. When I reviewed that data, I found those with both the MLIS and the CRM are in a much higher salary bracket than those without the Masters.
