Chris and Donna, when researching the best "paper" medium for preserving
permanent records, several experts whose opinions we solicited
(including, I believe, Doug Nishimura at RIT---Doug, if I'm misquoting
you, speak up) stated vellum is not acceptable.

The international standard for permanent-record papers is ISO 9706
"Information and documentation--Paper for documents--Requirements for
permanence" (see URL
http://www.iso.org/iso/iso_catalogue/catalogue_tc/catalogue_detail.htm?c
snumber=17562).

I prefer baked clay tablets to stone for durability, providing the clay
is properly selected and the baking is performed at the correct
temperature for the requisite amount of time (unfortunately, there are
no current national or international standards covering this medium, and
most of the practitioners of this format of recordkeeping--except, as
you note, Larry Medina--died out a few millennia ago).

Fred

Donna,

You can use Velum. Paper is a litle transitory for true long term
storage. Microfilm is a proven technoogy for a hundred years or so.
Whether micorfilm will last the five hundred years promised... I will
have to get back to you in four-hundred years or so. You could invest
isn Norsam(R). Tehy use a nickel uridium disk for storage and read it
with an electron microscope. Seems liek pretty cool technology. If I
remember corretly, they promise something like 10,000 years. You can
look into the feasability of stone. Some stone records have lasted
thousands of years. The engraving technology has made great strides
since Peter was a young scrbe. Of course if you want a true perspective
on long term storage you should ping Larry, He has been in the profeson
since 1972 B.C.
