Charlie, I bought an EMC Centera for the Archive of the NYC Dept. of Environmental Protection (prior position).

EMC's position, as presented to us then and today, is that Centera is the company's recommended solution for long-term storage (they call it "archiving") of inactive digital records.

Sounds like the EMC corporate message isn't completely in sync, or maybe the sales reps are encouraged to tell the customer whatever they think the customer wants is the "right and only solution".

And BTW, just because a study is nine years old, doesn't automatically make it out of date!

Best regards.

Fred,

Thanks for the offer, but 1999 is a bit dated. For the record, I did speak
with some EMC people (biggest storage company) recently. They agreed that
tape was best right now for keeping things a very long time because of the
long experience with it. However, EMC does have some really great (Centera)
archive storage solutions.
This situation will probably change soon because of the growing adaptation
of the XAM specification.
