Hmmm - the ListServe is such an antiquated means of sharing information
- I'm fascinated by this notion of protecting information quality due to
this arbitrary bandwidth restriction of 70 messages a day. Then again
the ARMA message boards are still far from active, and if you're like
me, those Yahoo groups are as bad as porn according to my corporate
firewall. What will we do if and when "Enterprise 2.0" makes its
entrance into our profession and social networking becomes a tool of
information exchange where who we are is imbedded in what we know.

Once upon a time business was conducted with martinis at lunch, and it
seems the next generation of workers will come to the office with
MySpace and FaceBook pages standing in for those smoke filled bars. I
understand the desire to have one's information streams be entirely
relevant to their work at hand, but I can't deny the certain spark I get
from noting a certain contributor knows an obscure Clash song, or has
experimented with habaneros That fact, like the beating of butterfly
wings, may have unimagined consequences in my obtaining knowledge far
beyond the narrow scope of daily tasks I had hoped to accomplish.

To be sure not all socializing leads to practical knowledge, but often
it greases the skids for the real exchange to occur.

In the meantime, I'm content acting as my own filter, deleting the "me
to's" and lame music choices - while hanging on to the "cool" one's if
for just long enough to take note of a name of someone I may run into in
a conference so we can talk about music and the implementation of SAP.
