For a corporate portal - SharePoint may be a good bet - considering that it can manage not just your web content but also use it for collaboration and for storing your other documents. Clearly it provides all of the basic features such as check-in/check-out, versioning, audit trails, integration with MS office tools, and can allow IT to add webparts to bring in other useful information.

The publishing portal template can be useful for site just getting started and comes with workflows, basic search etc. Authoring includes ability to edit web sites "as-is" or using Word etc. You can use the deployment features to deploy your site to the final "production" site.

Keep in mind that no tool is out of the box and getting your Sharepoint site to look just right (with your logos, stylesheets etc.) will take some time

Hope that helped - be happy to answer any specific questions...
