Christina--
My first job as an archivist was at Yale where I helped overhaul their
archival program and built a RIM program from scratch. I went on to head
up the RIM program for a few years until I decided to test out full blown
RIM in the corporate environment. At Yale, we started with 1 project
manager and 2 entry level archivists (I was one of them), plus 2 full time
administrative support staff. We looked to Helen Samuels' Varsity Letters
as a starting point to understand the major functions of an educational
institution. From there, we crafted a series of functional schedules.
Hiring consultants can be pricey, especially for a nonprofit. I believe
this was a crucial factor in developing the program at Yale. Hiring new
archivists/records managers straight from school was a smart move as it
brought in new ideas and innovative ways of developing a program. It also
gave young upstarts, like me, an opportunity to shine. Not that the whole
team were greenhorns - the project manager had a few years experience. The
records schedules are still posted to Yale's Manuscripts & Archives
website. For better or for worse, I don't think any changes or updates
have been made to the schedules and related policies since I left in 2005.
If you'd like to talk or pick my brain, I'd be happy to discuss over the
phone any questions you may have.

Consultants for College RIM program
Hello trusty RIM colleagues. I am finding myself greatly overwhelmed
with the process of having to create an RIM program from scratch with
about a billion other archival responsibilities to deal with so I'm
turning to your expertise.
The other day someone posted a message with a link to a consultant firm
for RIM training. It got me to thinking and I'm wondering if anyone has
any good suggestions for a consultant who could work with me to start
our RIM program. I HIGHLY doubt that the College would agree to
anything in the near future but seeing that I'm getting about three to
four emails a week from our General Council regarding records management
I'm sure she will soon get frustrated with my lack of progress so I
thought it might be a good idea to have a back up plan.
I'm wondering if anyone out there knows of a consulting firm or a
consultant that deals with setting up RIM programs for colleges and
universities that would work on a contract basis. If I am able to put
this back up plan in place then it will have to go out for bid so
multiple names and contact information would be great.
Thanks in advance for your suggestions!
