Hi all,

I received a few requests for me to compile the responses to my question
from yesterday and send them out to the list. I've listed the responses
from the RM and Archives lists separately for comparison (though I'm sure
some people are subscribed to both lists, so I'm not sure how useful that
comparison is!).

Thank you all for your very thoughtful and helpful responses. We really
appreciate your taking the time to share your insight, and it will be very
helpful in our presentation.

Thanks again,

Amber

*What would you say is the most important electronic records issue faced by
the records management community? By the archival community?*

Responses from the RM list:

· Privacy

· Security

· Access

· Preservation plans

· Migration

· Standards

· Applying retention values and determining retrieval requirements

· Disposition

· "digits to dust" syndrome / digital obsolescence

· Upfront appraisal and acquisition policies

· Definition of a record, and establishing policy that clearly informs
employees what their obligations are for creating, naming, managing,
preserving, and transferring custody of them to an authorized
representative.

· Divide between IT and Records

· Getting the Corporate Counsel and/or CFO on your side

· Staff training, buy-in, and ongoing usage.

· Determining what is out there that should be controlled as records

· Management of e-records, including email

· Identifying records that are contained in electronic form such as those
in databases.

· Folder / File / Subject heading naming conventions for stored records

· Developing an ERM that is seamlessly integrated into business tools and
systems so that employees don't feel the extra burden of RM.

Responses from the Archives list:

· Integrity in the reliability of the record

· Integrity in the work environment that surrounds the handling of records

· Maintaining authenticity

· "Tool gap": The tools for creating and distributing electronic records
are far more accessible than are the tools for managing those same records
for retrieval, reuse, preservation/disposition

· "Digital repository" - who is qualified to maintain ER long-term, what
is the best path to long-term preservation, what are the standards for
operating a digital repository

· Essential characteristics - what elements of an ER must be maintained
through time, what can be lost if necessary
· Discovery - how to be responsive to lawsuits, how to eliminate all
copies of an ER as soon as possible under schedule or law
