Fred, these are the only copies I know of. They were acquired from a
closed facility.

I used, "A-D test strips" to determine how bad the deterioration was. The
acetate based 35mm reels are showing levels of 1 to 1.5 which means
deterioration is starting / rapid degradation started. The polyester based
16mm reels are not affected and have been seperated. My facility is air
conditioned but everything not being backed up is going to offsite climate
controlled storage.

Re: Deteriorating Microfilm Reels

If the microfilm Seth is concerned about is showing symptoms of vinegar
syndrome, it certainly is silver-gelatin microfilm. In my experience,
silver-gelatin microfilm is MUCH more vulnerable to scratching than
diazo microfilm.

The wording of Seth's message implies there's only one copy of the
microfilm, so if there's any chance the microfilm images are important,
risk avoidance may be a serious consideration.

Best regards.

Fred

"Seth, there's no such thing as a "non-scratching" microfilm reader or
reader-printer, so you are risking some damage to the microfilm if you
follow this advice (sorry, Sharon--nothing personal)."

No offense taken - I should have clarified that the film I took to the
library were duplicates (originals sent to the State Archives). And now
you know just about everything I know about microfilm :)
