If you're question is specific to universities, I would say that because
public institutions are essentially part of state government, their
records are subject to that state's open records law. In the past year
emails from WVU appeared on the front page of the Pittsburgh
Post-Gazette, illustrating literally the now familiar maxim, "Don't put
anything in an email..." Private univesities' records would not be.

Public universities' records also may be scheduled by the state's
Archives and Records Management department.

Subject: [RM] RIM: Higher Ed v. For-Profit World

All,

Would those of you w/experience in both areas be willing to identify
ways in which RIM differs in public higher education as opposed to the
for-profit world?

Although I'm sure vast differences exist, I'm planning on aiming high
and want to familiarize myself w/practices in both sectors
to-hopefully--combine the best of both.

Thanks very much from an extremely appreciative newbie who is constantly
awed by the depth of knowledge and expertise shown by members of this
list.

VERY humbly,

Phil
