Actually my response was to criticize both management and IT. If they don't
like it they can defend themselves. Maybe it will draw attention to the
matter. As an IT type person myself, I get frustrated with IT people that
want to sell technology as a solution to challenges that, when
implementations fail, always try to blame users or vendors. But there is
also a management style that I call "delegating blame" where some executives
seem to want to always make it someone else's fault when things fail. (Watch
the GM executives now squirming on TV asking for the bailouts.) In the end
information management unravels and everyone pays for it is some way.
Regardless of who is to blame, we simply have to keep pointing out that all
technology is configured, installed, maintained, operated, and used by
humans, and needs a brain at work. That brain in most of the issues with
respect to records retention risks is usually in the head of a Records
Manager. We have a professional duty to proclaim when "the king is naked."

Just a quick response to Fred....
I know that there is a tendency of many to vilify the IT Community, and
that many sometimes fail to acknowledge that there are both very
responsible, and sometimes irresponsible IT professionals.
My bottom line is that everyone in a profession that "advises" senior
management has an obligation to advise that senior management about both
the benefits and potential risks of decisions that they may make.
Rather than "falling in love" with a new technology of any type, a more
balanced approach is certainly in order.

In all fairness to the much-vilified IT community, it is under constant
pressure from executive management to (1) pull another
organisation-saving rabbit out of the hat, and (2) produce more with
fewer resources.
Oh, as we have seen in the on-going economic catastrophe, executive
management will itself turn over in short order (it's called "leading by
example").
