I agree with you Emily. I have looked into the University of Michigan
program and was very interested in attending the school. However, I'm
in the Washington, D.C. area and the school does not office distance
learning education. If I'm wrong please let me know. I am interested
in there Information Policy program because my goal is to be a Chief
Privacy Officer.

Thanks for the email.

Hello everyone,

I've been lurking on this listserv for a few months, but never posted
anything. I believe a quick introduction is in order: My name is Emily
Gierada Cogswell and I'm currently in my last semester at the University
of
Michigan School of Information specializing in Archives & Records
Management
and Information Policy. I am starting to guess I'm rather an oddity in
the
field of RIM because I don't have a lot of experience in RIM; I decided
to
go to school to become one. I love everything about it, and I can't
wait to
join the ranks of professional records managers (absolutely getting my
CRM
when I can).

I just wanted to say a quick word about the University of Michigan
School of
Information and their degree program in Archives and Records Management.
I
can't speak in detail like a faculty member could about the how or why
of
what they teach, but I can speak from the viewpoint of a student who's
wish
is to work in the RIM field. UM School of Information offers a Masters
of
Science in Information where you can specialize (major) in a number of
areas: Library and Information Science, Archives and Records Management,
Information Policy, Community Informatics, Human Computer Interaction,
Preservation, Incentive Centered Design, and Information Retrieval. A
student can pursue one, combine two (as I have done), or tailor their
own
specialization with a mixture of classes that fit their career goals.
Futhermore, the School of Information offers duel degrees with the Law
School, School of Public Policy, School of Social Work, and the UM
Business
School, if someone was looking for a stronger background in law or
business. The variety and opportunities are really amazing.

Although the School of Information does not offer a "certification" in
records management, their curriculum can be taken in such a way that
fulfills the ARMA Core Competencies. In addition, the School of
Information
offers a strong focus on technology with classes that emphasize
digitization
and electronic records. The faculty in the Archives & Records
Management
department are working on expanding the RIM-specific class selection to
focus more on the creation, use, and storage of active records, instead
of
making a part of the archival courses. I have gained a lot of general
RIM
knowledge through this program, in addition to information policy,
privacy
and data security, information law, and e-discovery. In addition, the
School of Information requires a certain number of practical engagment
credits (8 total - up to 15) as a part of your graduation, so a student
does
come out of the program having experienced a real world information
system.

It is my hope that with all this education talk on the listserv, a few
people might check out what the University of Michigan School of
Information
(www.si.umich.edu) has to offer.

Thank you for listening to my short commercial.
