Samantha asked "do any of you have resources or specific guidelines you used while putting together your
own retention schedule"

Several state/federal agency retention schedules are available online and can be a good reference point for general record retention categories. Of course these retention periods are applicable *only* to that agency and cannot be copied as-is to another organization.

There are also commercial third party tools available for records retention research. Skupsky (www.irch.com), Zasio (www.zasio.com) are amongst the prominent ones. They both contain state laws/regs and federal statutes, as well as regulations appearing in the Code of Federal Regulations and the Federal Register.

Depending on the type of organization, legal research services such as WestLaw or LexisNexis may also be appropriate for conducting legal retention research (assuming of course that one has subscription access ;)

Thanks
Ganesh Vednere
