little bit of background information for folks who haven't been on this
listserv for long. It started out in the late 80s or early 90s by a group of
RMs who worked in the education area. The list has gone through at least two
moves that i know of since I joined back when it was hosted by syr.edu. It
was moved to Mn then sometime in 1995 or 96 it was moved to where it
currently resides. ufl.edu

The current owner is Susan McKinney better know as the List Goddes. Along
with me there is another listadmin Marc Wolfe a silent but very important
part of the list admin.

From my years of membership on this list and as a listadmin I can tell that
if this list were converted to a blog/rss feed it would slowly die. Our
subscribership is almost a perfect representation of the Crossing the Chasm
graph
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Revised_technical_adoption_cycle.png
Mr. Wilkins and his acolytes are on the far left hand side of the graph. The
vast majority of our subscribers are in the middle with an occasional few on
the right

One of the problems that we face on this list (and yes I know that some
refer to me as the List Nazi) is the failure of folks to read the postings
carefully. We all want to jump in and answer the question. We all make
assumptions based upon our experience. If our experience is primarily
government then our answers reflect that experience by mentioning FOIA, open
records, the CFR or if we're in the legal arena we see mention of case
files, etc. and suffer through incredibly long disclaimers attached to a
single line response. or we get individuals who can't find an email address
for someone on the list

my point is that the list represents a technological microcosm of the real
world. Imagine the havoc that would ensue if we were able to convert this
list to an RSS feed. I guarantee you that the handholding and
backdoor/behind the scenes help would increase exponentially.

This is a proven technology that keeps humming along no matter what new
glitzy, glammy bling bling comes down the road. Yes it is the lowest common
denominator technology compared to twitter and rss and whatever else but it
works for the vast majority of the subscribers.

My advice is to read the postings, ask yourself "what additional information
do I need to give a valid answer" then sent out your answer.

No considering the 140 character limitations of twitter lord only knows how
many twitters I would have created for this.

back to my training
