Agreed. This sort of goes back to last week's discussion about
participation in social networking sites and what happens to content posted
there.

Personally, I don't think anyone should post anything anywhere unless they
know the pedigree of the site they're posting to and who the 'owner' is, if
there is one. Most legitimate sites will provide a condition of use
statement of some sort that tells you what is liable to happen to content
you post there, and they generally let you know if you retain any rights to it.

This is an issue I've had to explain to my children (and I use the term
loosely, seeing as they have both reached chronological adult age now) and
also to the large volume of students I work with at the local high school.
They tend to be quite cavalier with their attitudes about content directly
attributable to them they post on social networking sites. And they are
even worse about images and opinions they post about others.

What they fail to realize is the "long tail" associated with this content
and the inability to scrub it, because although it may not have digital
permanence, it can have an ugly half-life. Girls find things other girls
post about boys they are no longer fond of and vice-versa... and I've
printed stuff I've found about some of them that's been shared with others
as examples and they've been sort of embarrassed by it.

This is one of my personal "service projects" that I've been involved in
since before I was asked by my new President to take one on. It's one that
many of you might want to consider getting involved it as well. It doesn't
cost anything but your time, and you can use it to help some children you
might care about.

Larry
