A question has come from our HR department as to whether they have to label all HR documents in employee files. They are requesting to have HR employees sign a confidentiality agreement, that it is understood that employee records are Confidential while within HR control. However when the records are released from the department, they should be labeled at that point. One reason for this request is the large volume of records concerned. I would appreciate hearing from anyone who has a procedure in place for handling classification of employee records according to an Information Classification Policy and what requirements are placed on HR to make sure they are in compliance.

Insufficient data?
Wouldn't the content of those files determine both the sensitivity of
those documents and required retention?
Do the polices for those document categories include retention periods
as well as access control?
Are those retention periods appropriate for the HR records?

Regards
Jay
