An interesting article, James. I'm sure we all wish them the very best
of luck. Hmmm, maybe the Gilder-Lehrman Foundation can help.
Just to clarify why the role of notaries in Louisiana differs so much
from that in other states. As you will recall, Louisiana was a French
possession for many years. Louisiana's legal system is based partly on
the French "Civil Law" system, in which notaries have many functions
which, in "Common Law" countries, are assumed by attorneys.
The caption on the photograph accompanying the linked Times Picayune
article erroneously states "The signature of Marie Lavaux is seen here
on a notarial record housed in the city's Notarial Archives." Actually,
it's identified in the document as her mark.
