The software we are buying has two separate modules and we chose to buy both 1) a regular email vault,  2) an 'ediscovery' module that searches the entire vault (not just the searcher's own emails) from its own access point in order to builds lawyerly case files. 
 
Retention rules must be assigned from both access points. Therefore 'exception handling' must be performed if there's a conflict over retention periods assigned by users vs assigned by 'ediscovery' programmers. The problem is that the 'ediscovery' access point loses access at some point if the user assigned a longer retention period (only the user can search their own email for the remainder of the retention period).
