Larry,

I'd be interested in hearing what you think should be done in this case,
and who should do it. I've had more than enough of my own experience in
trying to work with some vendors who have no interest in listening to
others.... and have found it a poor investment of time to engage them.

This is something that's been discussed here previously and it's
potentially
of a lot greater concern than some of the other issues passing around
that
are much shorter term concerns.

As the writer clearly states, the work being done by one segment of the
storage industry tends to be quite self-serving; it's to develop a
publication misidentified as a 'standard' for a storage format that only
a
few large scale players are buying into (yes, they know who they are,
and
many of us do too).

Problem is no one is taking the time to engage with them and attempt to
keep
this from happening... they're simply satisfied with 'paying no
attention to
the man behind the curtain" because ensuring no one segment of the
storage
industry hijacks a format standard isn't something that money can be
made
from.

And I think THEY know who THEY are in this discussion as well, and so do
many of us.

Instead of working on initiatives that are self serving, it would sure
be
nice to see some effort put forth towards something that will TRULY
impact
the Records and Information Management Profession and the assets those
professionals are charged with managing for decades to come.

Larry
