Joining the chorus here - we recently significantly changed costs on a
planned major imaging project by recommending they use the money they
were originally proposing to spend scanning inactive, low retention
backlogs to focusing more on process improvement, active record creation
and scanning, metadata capture and design, how to apply retention in
their electronic environment, system acquisition/design, etc.... These
types of discussions offer wonderful opportunities to ask the question:
"Why aren't we paperless?", and change the conversation from one of
paper conversion to one of records creation and maintenance in an
electronic, less-paper environment. The solution is not necessarily
scanning the paper; the real solution might be not creating it in the
first place.
