Luckily for you, you chose a product that doesn't allow detailed retention schedule programming. We are buying the eVault and the Discovery Accelerator (DA). The DA, used by our attorneys, searches all emails of all users by searching the 'journaling' copy or access point (it's not a different copy because everything is single-instance archived). The vendor tells us there must be one retention period, or maximum 2 or 3, for the entire journaling repository or the tool won't work well. Talk about 'big bucket' retention!

The user-side retention should therefore be less than the DA journaling retention period so that attorneys can always access everything that exists. If the user archive (user access to own emails) is a longer retention period than the journaling/DA access, then the user can access their own email after the attorneys lose access to it. So the attorneys will think the email doesn't exist. (everythign that exists is discoverable so the attorneys better be able to find it for themselves using DA). We are probaly going with 10 year journaling retention and 5 year user archive retention (or 'user access'). After 5 years, users will think their email is gone but actually it exists for another 5 years accessible only to the attorneys/users of DA.
