< Printing to paper is one way of retaining the email in accordance with established retention.  Another is using an electronic document management system that also manages emails.>


Right - according to policy they have to either move it to a different file or print it if they want to save it.  Once they move it or print it - it becomes part of whatever record series it belongs to and takes on that retention.  

This was brought on by a new VP of Sales - he sees too much email being printed and was told that it was due to the 90 day deletion fact.  The reps apparently don't have a long enough time to follow up on the email so they are printing everything.  

Anyway, I certainly do not see spending the money on a document mgmt system because the new guy thinks his reps print too much paper.
