"Dwyer's favorite target among the habits of [what he calls] comfortable
managers is the time they spend on mission and vision statements.
According to Dwyer, because these creations of "public speech" are
designed to elicit everyone's agreement, they are too vague to reflect
what anyone really wants. Consequently, in terms of producing desired
behavior, they are a total waste of time. Developing goals and
objectives under them serves only to occupy the time of the "relaxed"
manager, who should be busy personally convincing his colleagues and
employees to help him achieve his objectives. While visions, missions,
and company goals may make people feel better about their jobs, such
public pronouncements are not equivalent to personal goals and so are
relatively impotent."

I think this pretty much says it all about the value of mission
statements.

Subject: [RM] What Does Yours Do?

What is the purpose of your Records Management Program's Mission
Statement? Why write a Mission Statement for you RM Program? What does
your Mission Statement do for you and your RM staff? What does your
Mission statement do for the people your RM program serves? What does it
do for top management?

(Note: I have not asked anyone to share their Mission Statement.)

Thanks in advance for your thoughts.
