Peter, I agree with you completely.  A calendar can be considered a record if it has relevance to your work.

I would say it is a record especially if you record the appointments 
associated with your work. 

this is one of those "how many angels fit on the head of pin" discussions 

there is no right answer, no quick fix, no magic ball to tell you the answer
