Great questions, Ben!  We will be dealing with this more and more.

Developing best practices will take some serious thought, and maybe some 
trial-and-error.  And that will take some time.

Here is some peripheral help: yesterday I got notice that Fat Wire is 
offering a Forrester report on the leading Web Content Management 
software vendors.  It is available at 
http://img.en25.com/Web/Fatwire/Forrester.pdf.  Of course, Fat Wire gets 
a good report.  The recommended companies with the most credentials in 
RIM are Interwoven and Open Text.

This isn't the answer, but it may be helpful.  Good luck.  Let us know 
what you find.
