well, there has been many a time using Word that I've wished I could still
use WordPerfect 4.1. But Peter is right, I do RM at work but rarely at home.
What I do is thin out the DVDs whenever I run out of storage space. So I
might decide to only keep 2 sets per year for the really old stuff, whereas
it's monthly for recent years.

The trick with disk images is, you get the lot, the whole hard disk, bit by
bit rather than file by file. No easy way to go in and selectively delete
some but not other files. So mixed in with the WP files I don't need are
other formats holding things I do. As long as I have the imaging software,
and a DVD drive, I can always restore onto a spare hard drive, or with
BootitNG's TBI Viewer I can extract individual files.

Ever since Adobe put PDF into the public domain I've been doing PDF versions
of important files, which would be good enough for evidenciary purposes and
more migratable. But yes, the older stuff is probably unusable.

But isn't this something we all need to think about as we roll out EDMS's -
that electronic storage is so cheap that we don't need to bother about
selective disposal of unwanted stuff? I know there is a risk in keeping
things too long, but for most of us that's very low probability. When I can
buy a terabyte of disc for Aust$99, is there in fact any future for complex
retention schedules and sophisticated software?

I think not. So what are we going to do instead?

Cheers

Glenn

These views are mine alone. They may or may not be those of any
previous or present employers or clients. I don't know. If I'd asked
and they'd agreed, I would have signed it "Harry Peck and Co and
Glenn". Or whatever. But I haven't, so I didn't.
