Or let your battery die...

It appears that late last week, a major snafu by the new owner of DANGER
systems, the provider that has been supporting Sidekick data streams for
years prior to an acquisition by Microsoft, has lost ALL OF THE DATA
belonging to over 1 million users.

There are more details here, but it seems that although M$ had two years to
ensure everything was sufficiently backed up, doing so wasn't a priority for
them.

My daughter recently graduated with a BA in Deaf Studies from CSUN, and the
Sidekick has been the device of choice for those in the hearing impaired
community for 5 or more years now, even though there have been numerous
strides in full keyboard devices, many remained tethered to their
Sidekicks... and unfortunately the service provider they were available from.

However, none of these users (reports list the number at exceeding 1
million) have ever experienced a total loss of information, as Danger (the
prior data service provider) maintained 3 levels of servers and backup
beyond that. Also, no one was made aware of the change in hosts or that
there was any potential change in how the systems were run prior to the cut
over... which seems strange to me.

My daughter is fortunate in that her phone is still powered up and data
resides on it, but the only way she was made aware of this is she was in a
store this weekend and looking to replace the Sidekick AND change service
providers, and was told by the salesperson of the problem. BUT...
presently, her phone is not connected to a server and she cannot sync/backup
the data.

Far be it from M$ or T-Mobile to push a message out to ALL OF THEIR
CUSTOMERS notifying them of this problem to provide them an opportunity to
salvage their information by ensuing their phones remained on and charged
until they came up with a plan to address the problem, like "bring your
phone into a local store and we'll do a direct backup of the content for
you" (??)
