I use the redacting tape. I like it better than a black marker because
1) it's more forgiving and 2) it's neater. When handing over documents
that have been redacted with the tape, there is just a blank spaces, not
blacked out areas.

You do have to be careful with the tape when copying, because it can
slip. Also, if you are scanning the document, you'll need to check to
see if there is bleed through.

But I've used it for years, and would never go back to the markers. As
for white-out - no way. It's messy, takes longer, and smells.

Hope everyone has a good weekend,

Susan

Excerpted from the Nat'l Archives (UK) toolkit:

Blacking/whiting out. Another simple solution is to photocopy the
original document and use a black marker pen to block out the sensitive
material.
The redacted version should then be photocopied again to produce an
access version. The further photocopy is necessary as information
redacted using marker pen can be read when held up to light.

The same process can be employed substituting a good quality correction
fluid for marker pen. Ensure that no redacted text is visible before
making the second photocopy, which again is necessary as correction
fluid can be easily removed.
