Well said, Larry - and great analogy!
 
The caveat for standards is:
they are a starting point, especially useful for those who are unsure where to begin when defining their own needs.
 
For my first car, I started with my Dad's selection criteria and modified it to suit my needs. His criteria gave me ideas about what I should be looking for - and examples of what I absolutely did (or did not) want.  :-)
