I've had the Sony Reader since January of 2009. It has opened up a vast
amount of reading to me that I didn't know existed, including free
e-books and books no longer in copyright. Now every book I read weighs
10 oz and comes with a leather cover. The model I have comes with a
built in light for night reading and a swipe of my thumb turns the page.
The Sony readers allow you to access library books from your local
library. The Barnes & Noble Nook allows you to share a book with a
friend. The Kindle allows you to put the same book on other Kindles
connected through a single account, and to seamlessly pick up where you
stopped reading on the Kindle to your iPhone. Many e-book readers
(except Kindle) allow reading in the epub format. There will be ereaders
with plastic screens (maybe a plastic battery too) and color in 2010,
and bigger sizes. The 5 inch screen machines sell for as little as $199.
This is a rapidly changing technology. It's fun to watch it evolve.
Authors and publishers haven't worked out all the issues yet, but most
are at least talking about what they are planning to do. I would love to
have my RIM resources available to carry with me on my ereader.
Mobileread.com is a good resource for the latest developments.
