Subject: Re: [RM] Long term e-records review

I just googled "recommended long term electronic records storage" and got
several relevant responses, some state level, but with NARA at the top.
NARA's documentation is about 15 years but still has value. Here's the
link: http://www.archives.gov/preservation/technical/. from a quick
perusal, none seem to give hard and fast numbers for how many years before
reviewing e-recs. Jesse's numbers resonate with places where such
practices/reviews exist. I periodically reference a paper published by
Alan Andolsen about life expectancy of electronic media that's been very
helpful for me on many occasions...just found it in my reference
folder...it's titled "Will Your Records Be There When You Need Them" and
was published in The Information Management Journal's May-June 2006 issue.
I usually use his article to open the eyes of the uninitiated who think
they only need to transfer records to an optical disk or tape which will
retain them perfectly for eternity; it works every time. (A posthumous
thank you to Alan. His legacy lives on!)
