I believe that there are several issues that need to be considered

1. What information does a social media service provider keep accessible
2. What information does a social media service provider maintain about you and your account that is not accessible. Who does have access to such information and how is it used.
3. Once an account is closed or otherwise inactive what information does a social media service provider keep, how is it used and who has access to such information
4. Just because a message is taken down from one social media site does not mean that it has not migrated out to many other such places
5. Who owns the information you place on "your" social media site. Could it be sold to third parties without your permission

All I can say is that you should read your service agreements and consider the consequences. It is after all a contract and should be given the same review as any other contract.

Recently one of my FB friends posted a link to the Academy Award nominated film Logorama. The site linked to had the full film online, but was not the official site. within a few hours FB had 'deleted' my friend's post as well as anyone else who had posted the link
