One of Larry's points - <Inconsistent application or retention policy> - is the big argument for applying retention to data here at Waterworks. If we have a retention schedule and apply it to only SOME of the records covered by a retention series, then we are invalidating our retention policy. In order to avoid this, we must either keep EVERYTHING forever (paper, photos, data, email, surveillance tapes, audio tapes, backup tapes, etc.) OR apply the retention to everything. With cost factors, data breach factors, privacy issues, and so on, we have determined it is much better to apply the retention to everything.
