John, to the excellent recommendations others have made, I would add
Alcatraz Island, site of the former high-security prison (see
http://www.alcatrazcruises.com/).
If you have the time and inclination, a detour to Mount Lassen Volcanic
National Park, weather permitting, is a very different experience, but a
wonderful one.
