Greetings,

My name is Melissa Thompson and I am a longtime list lurker who has
benefited over the last five years from the bevy of knowledgeable
professionals who post here on a regular basis. I work in Archives and
Records Management for Sedgwick County, Kansas local government and I need
your help. I have searched the list archives and found postings regarding
records management training, but what I need is more specific, so I thought
I would go out on a limb and ask for your collective assistance. I am
looking for recent or updated records management training videos.

One of our functions within this organization is to provide records
management training as part of the curriculum for our Professional
Development and Supervisory/Management Certificate programs that the county
offers in-house. The county has extended these training programs to
employees at the City of Wichita and local non-profits as well, so we draw
from a rather large base of highly diversified individuals for our training.

At the end of every training class our students are asked to evaluate the
class and the instructor. Probably the largest percentage of criticism I
last received was that our training videos were “dated.” While they are very
good videos I do have to agree that technology today has surpassed the
technology portrayed in the videos. For instance, generally today our
departments scan everything whereas ten or more years ago everything was
microfilmed. The videos we currently use are:  *Public Records Public Trust;
Local Government Records Management in New York State* (State Archives and
Records Administration, Albany, 1993)*, *and *For the Record, Records and
Information Management* (Commonwealth Films, Inc. 1995).

Our RM training is pretty basic; we start with the definition of a record,
define records management, government records, lifecycle, the different
values associated with records, and why it is important to destroy records
when they are eligible. At this point we show *For the Record* then discuss
the benefits of records management and the complexities of local government.
We next show *Public Records Public Trust.* This is followed by discussion
of our mandates under Kansas law and a discussion of retention schedules,
storage guidelines, and for those folks who come from outside we discuss
municipality records management (advisory under Kansas state law.)
I looked on the Commonwealth Films website and the *For the Record* video is
one they still have available. What we would really like is a digital video
we can insert into our PowerPoint, but a DVD or VHS tape would work
fine. Does anyone out there know if any new Records Management training
videos are available? We have discussed removing one of the videos and
inserting class exercises since most of the other curriculum in these
certificate programs include hands-on in their training. We still think that
the examples provided in at least one video would be beneficial. Any and all
suggestions will be appreciated.
