People Will Talk: Protecting Trade Secrets in the World of Social Media
For many companies, trade secrets are what give them an edge over
their competitors. Yet, the risk of losing that edge is increasing
with the rising use of social media (e.g., Facebook, Twitter, MySpace)
in business.
Given its nature, social media ordinarily is not associated with
protecting confidential information. Most stories in the news about
the perils of social media relate to personal privacy rights. However,
similar problems exist with respect to other types of confidential
information, and confidential information is being injected into
social media networks regularly, although not necessarily
intentionally.
