The Libraries of the Metropolitan Museum of Art invite applications for the
full-time position of Public Services Librarian, Nolen Library and Thomas J.
Watson Library.

 

The Public Services Librarian will be actively involved in providing
excellent reference service in Nolen and Watson Libraries. This position
coordinates Nolen Library's services on weekends, including managing and
providing ongoing training for volunteers and other staff who assist in
providing service to the library's diverse clientele. In addition, the
incumbent will develop new program initiatives to enhance Nolen's reach and
to encourage engagement with the library and the Museum, and will
participate in collection development for Nolen and Watson Libraries. The
schedule is Saturday-Wednesday, with some flexibility required depending
upon the programs developed.

 

Staff in the Museum's libraries work in a customer service driven,
collaborative, and team-based environment.

Public Services Librarian, Nolen Library/Thomas J. Watson Library

 

Primary Responsibilities and Duties:

* Supervise and provide training for volunteer staff and other staff working
in Nolen Library

* Provide high-quality reference service and instruction

* Develop programming initiatives to enhance and expand Nolen's reach

* Select and manage materials for the library collection

* Work collaboratively with Education staff to coordinate Storytime and
other joint initiatives

 

Requirements and Qualifications:

 

Experience and Skills (All Required):

* Commitment to providing excellent and proactive reference service

* Familiarity with children's literature and experience working with
children and young adults

* Proven ability to train, instruct, supervise, and manage

* Ability to work effectively both independently and in a team environment

* Proven ability to initiate projects and follow through

* Effective written and oral communication skills

* Knowledge of current library and technology trends

 

Knowledge and Education (All Required):

* MLS from an ALA-accredited program, or current matriculation in an
accredited MLS program

* Supervisory experience

* Library experience with an emphasis on reference

* General knowledge of and interest in the history of art
