To demonstrate Paul's story with food, I have a friend used to trim the
ends off her pot roast. At some point she wondered about the advantage of
removing the ends (which were were still kept in the pot to cook) and
asked her mother about it. Her mother said that's the way she always
prepared it. My friend then went back another generation and asked her
grandmother to which she replied: The roast was was too long to fit in the
pot she originally had!
