"Most companies have hundreds or even thousands of business applications in which financial, product, defect, customer, employee, and other material information is managed and maintained. Unfortunately, these sources of information and systems of record are often overlooked as sources of relevant information in ediscovery or for regulatory compliance and record keeping. As IT organizations drive major cost cutting efforts post-recession, decommissioning applications has become common practice because it provides substantial cost savings -- however legal considerations may be completely overlooked."
