Jessica,
Very difficult area to research.
Good discussion in context of email in ANSI/ARMA TR-02-2007 available from ARMA.
Bottom line is media destruction of multiple overwrite necessary to truly destroy electronic records.
Deletion is essentially meaningless. You can undelete.
IT people do not want to discuss this in policy because of the complication to their work flow.
Remember that Martha Srewart went to prison for a deleted email.
"Autonomy" is the leader in applications and systems to truly destroy ESI.
