---------------------------------

More than 27,000 copies of the previous Cohasset/ARMA electronic records management surveys have been downloaded.

This is the 7th bi-annual survey. The survey's conclusions are based on the data compiled from this year's respondents and a total of nearly 10,000 respondents in the six prior surveys.

Here are some of the survey's major conclusions:

- Increasingly, electronically stored information (ESI) is more likely to be addressed by records management programs, retention schedules, and hold programs.

- There is continued progress in the overall management of ESI, however, the effectiveness of these programs has decreased somewhat.

- Performance ratings improved as the organization size increased - participants for small organizations reported the lowest scores and large organizations reported the highest program maturity.

- Although considerable progress has been achieved, there are many significant records and information management issues that still need to be addressed.

- Although 90% of participants have retention schedules, much fewer stated they had formal records management programs, and fewer still had formal hold programs.

- Retention schedules still need improvement - 89% of survey participants identified needed improvements.

- Effective retention and disposition practices are deficient, especially for ESI.

The information explosion, technology changes, and increased complexity of laws and regulations, create a compelling call for new approaches. Many of the processes that were sufficient in the past now have become inadequate.

The survey's bottom line: there is an urgent three part strategic need to achieve successful information governance.

- Commit to improvement,

- Embrace the concepts of "reasonableness" and "good faith" in the management of ESI over its lifecycle, and

- Maximize achieving your information governance goals by lowering your operating risks.

We encourage you to download, read, and share this insightful Cohasset/ARMA White Paper. It is free! We are confident you will find this survey's findings informative and beneficial.

Thanks to EMC’s support for the production of the White Paper, it is free.!

We extend our special thanks to ARMA International for co-sponsoring this survey once again with Cohasset Associates.
