My experience with the practical application of Information Governance
over the past 14 months has taught me that organizations must look at
Information Governance (IG) from more then one point of view. IT, HR,
Legal, and the Business Units are all critical aspects of IG. Legal looks
at the policy/compliance aspects, IT looks at the hardware and software
aspects, HR looks at new structures such as IG functions reporting to the
CIO, and business units look at ways to re-design their processes.

RIM professionals, because of their broad understanding of information
flows throughout the organization, are in an ideal position to 'broker' all
of these necessary ingredients. The missing ingredient is the ability of
RIM professionals to think in terms of corporate strategy. GARP not only
helps them to do that, but it gives them a tool that is more understandable
and acceptable by the other four interested parties (IT, HR, Legal, and
business units).

Like Julie, I '*applaud ARMA for taking the opportunity it has before it
to define something that is clearly important to our organizations,'* and
to us as RIM professionals. And like Julie, I believe that we are in the
position within our organization's to ensure that the final form of
Information Governance is truly 'corporate' in nature.

I have a lot of respect for the leading professionals in our industry
and I believe that we will raise to the challenge. Within my organization
(a major utility with approx. 2000 employees and 700,000 clients) we have
developed an Information Governance function that reports to the CIO and
has garnered the support of all four of these interested parties. We now
have a strategic plan and roadmap that has gone to senior management for
their review and acceptance.

We need to look at our profession for what it is; full of opportunity
and with room for RIM professionals to work within the areas of Records
Management, Information Management, or Information Governance. I have
experienced the possibilities and I refuse to take second place to any of
the other groups that I have mentioned above. Information Governance will
be successful only when all five of our groups are contributing.
