Homestead records see new light, fresh eyes
early 140 years later, a retired couple from Utah slowed their two-person
assembly line at the National Archives in Washington.

Don and Marilyn Vickers had held the hopes of thousands of homesteaders in
their gloved hands. They had gently unfolded, flattened, photographed and
returned the files to their storage cartons.
