Peter, thanks for the link to the Roanoke story. Interesting how cavalier Mr. Trejbal is regarding the "right" of the public to know these facts. What would he say if we knew what he accessed at the public library? Would he endorse the publication of those living in his state who have been clinically diagnosed with potentially violent mental illness?

It is absurd to use a straw man such as "because the government is involved it is everyone's business". There are many government actions (permits, licenses, investigations, etc.) that should remain closed. Stripping one group of their rights to ensure the "rights" of everyone is a terrifying pursuit. And as I stated on a local Linked in blog, just because something is legal does not make it moral.

While we as a profession must operate within the policies of our environments, I hope our profession can also lead in protecting the sensitivity of information. From the ARMA Website, here is part of the Code of Professional Responsibility. You must each decide where lies the debate concerning records of gun owners.

.	Affirm the legal, ethical, and moral use of information.

.	Affirm that the collection, maintenance, distribution, and use of information about individuals is a privilege in trust: the right to privacy of all individuals must be both promoted and upheld.

.	Support the free flow of publicly available information as a necessary condition for an informed and educated society.
