Hugh,

Re: " the thought that somehow we could know in advance via the ability to
infinitely gather all forms of records (cell calls, video surveillance,
purchases, tolls, etc.) who will do bad things and intervene, appeals to
many of us. But the issue of freedom and the government intruding in our
lives scares us. (As it should.) "

Isn't it interesting that we as Records Managers often "preach" about the
risks of retaining too many records with potentially "risky" content, but
are expected to think it's OK for the government to practically track and
record our every move? While we pay for it. Not knowing who will use it for
what purposes? And witness major computer security breaches occurring all
the time? If the credit companies, banks, and the US government (WikiLeaks)
cannot stop break-ins, are they creating useful data or just disasters
waiting to happen?

The reason I watch Fox News more than other channels (though I also flip to
CNN constantly and like them as well), is that their Fair and Balanced
debate scenarios place diametrically opposed liberals and conservatives
sitting right next to each other with completely opposite views on issues. I
am hoping that they will one day have a Records Manager (throw it away when
its value is gone) debating an Archivist (keep that stuff for future
generations to assess its value to them). In fact, I think I might just
suggest that they do that! There are two sides to every issue.

John
