You are killing me here
I would claim that a core sample is a core sample.
There value of the sample is to be determined. Shall we say, documented and
recorded. My primary concern would be the documentation and related
records. Certainly the records have a life. I don't know how long the
geologists want to keep the samples.
caveat: I worked on the Lincoln Washburn accession at NARA. there were a
lot of samples. As a young, eager, admirer of the total archives concept, I
recommended that we keep the samples (man those rocks were heavy).
