Gripe with Technology

Technology has removed our capacity to do.

Larry pointed out the issue with modern cars. The problem is so much more
pervasive. I would weep for the next generation if I could remember how to
do it. Maybe I can find an app the will do it for me. I recall letters that
my Grandma wrote to me, seemingly a lifetime ago (when was the last time
you received a handwritten letter). Her script was magnificent. Back in her
day if your handwriting was poor you were hit. The letter flowed, tapping
into each important subject then moving to the next. Her letters today may
be considered a work of art. I anticipate the job announcement for a new
archivist requiring the ability to read cursive writing (something that is
longer taught in most public schools).

Our business processes have become increasingly automated. Efficiency
gained, humanity reduced. A fair tradeoff if profit is your primary goal,
maybe not so good if…..

What happens when technology fails to perform? Can we reverse engineer the
process?

Does the integration of technology throughout our life improve or decrease
the quality of life. Is there a qualitative difference between a photograph
and digital photo? Does it matter? (try to get a photo developed in a
timely manner) I remember my uncle taking family pictures and spending a
great deal of time lining up the shot. I don’t think he ever took a “bad”
photograph in his life. Have you ever seen a great “selfie”?

Time, so precious to all, is devoured by technology. We have come to accept
the time technology takes as a given. Time is lost to technology. We give
it and exchange we get what? I rcall a time when the claim was technology
was going to free us from constraints. Quality of life would improve if we
allowed technology to be used. Where is my jet pack? Maybe Jonathan E. was
right.

So I guess my gripe is we have lost so much quality in order to gain so
much quantity. Geez Glen, next week see if you can’t come up with a more
upbeat “Friday Pondering”. Maybe something like, if Turkey were not the
traditional main course for Thanksgiving dinner, what would be? No doubt
someone will google the answer.
