Presentation Description:
"Two of hearts: Advancing archives and records management "e-harmony" ArchiveGrid, a free online search tool by OCLC Research for archives and special collections materials, includes more than 2 million collection descriptions from more than 1,000 libraries and archives, museums, and historical societies. Included in its index of MARC records (brought in from WorldCat), and EAD, HTML, and PDF finding aids harvested directly from contributor web pages, are listings for institutional records which hold both historical value for the institution they document, and research value for scholars. When description and encoding of electronic archival collection descriptions at the institutional level are done well, they play well in larger aggregations such as ArchiveGrid and reach a larger user base of faculty, students, genealogists, and independent scholars. From this standpoint, archivists and records managers - two of an organization's information management "hearts" - can collaborate to ensure a harmonious of transition of materials into the archival phase of their life cycles."

Speaker Biography:

She earned her BA in Journalism from Indiana University and worked for several years as a newspaper reporter in Oregon. At OCLC, Ellen does various work associated with ArchiveGrid and writes for the ArchiveGrid Blog.
